Abstract
Plastics are widely used due to their malleability, but their waste causes
environmental problems, such as microplastic pollution. On the other hand,
coral reef damage frequently occurs due to human activities and natural
phenomena. This research aims to develop an artificial coral reef product
named Coralify, made from plastic waste, biochar, and resin, using the six
phase product design and development process by Ulrich-Eppinger. Product
testing was conducted to measure microplastic contamination in seawater and
evaluate product formulations. The research results indicate that priority
customer needs attributes include sturdy, practical, and waste-rejected
products. Meanwhile, the priority technical response attributes include
modular component design, the addition of resin for strength, the use of PET
plastic, and the incorporation of biochar. The selected product design concept
is a modular design equipped with a fish house feature. Microplastic
contamination tests showed that the seawater used in the research initially
contained microplastic contamination, and there was a downward trend in
microplastic contamination in the seawater, contrary to the initial hypothesis
predicting an upward trend in contamination. Two hypotheses could
potentially explain this: the probability theory and microplastic creation
theory. This indicates that Coralify does not significantly contribute to
microplastic pollution. Meanwhile, the difference test showed no significant
differences among formulations, thus all formulations can be used for the
production of Coralify.
limbahnya menyebabkan masalah lingkungan, seperti pencemaran
mikroplastik.
Coralify.
